EV Charging Station Buyer's Guide
Why Buy An Electrical Vehicle?
There are numerous benefits to owning an electric vehicle (EV). With an electric vehicle, you will never need an oil change, you drastically reduce your carbon emissions, you can repair your vehicle by simply downloading a system update, and you can save a ton of money on gas.
Why Buy an EV Charging Station?
If you own, or are looking to own, an electric vehicle (EV), there are many benefits to purchasing an EV charging station, also known as an EVSE (electrical vehicle supply equipment). Instead of going to gas stations, you can charge your car from the comfort of your home while you sleep. The convenience is unparalleled!
All electrical vehicles come with a 120-volt charging cord, which is compatible with a level 1 charger. The 120-volt cord can plug into a household outlet; however, one hour of charging will only give you 4-5 miles on the road. For most EV owners, this charging rate is not fast enough. Therefore, many EV owners choose to upgrade to level 2 chargers, which uses a 240-volt outlet. Level 2 charging stations can charge an EV twice as fast as level 1 chargers.
What Type of EV Chargers Are Available?
Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations are available in three categories: Level 1, Level 2, and direct current (DC) fast chargers. The table below summarizes the differences.
Most EVSE’s use amps to indicate how fast it will charge the electric vehicle. A general rule of thumb is an output of 30 amps provides approximately 30 miles of driving per one hour of charging time. Similarly, an output of 40 amps provides approximately 40 miles of driving per one hour of charging time. Purchasing an EVSE with at least 30 amps is recommended.
Does my EVSE go inside or outside?
If you do not have a garage to store your electric vehicle, you can purchase an outdoor equipped EV charging station. If you need an outdoor EV charging station, look for EVSE that are weatherproof. E&G Electrical Innovations can also recommend trustworthy EVSE products for you.
How much does it cost to install an EV charging station?
When looking to install an EV charging station, there are two separate charges to consider. The first charge is the price of the EVSE itself. The cheapest models run for about $500 while models with more functionality, such as wifi, can cost around $800. The second charge to consider is the labor cost of installation. Usually this can cost anywhere from a few hundred up to one thousand dollars.
